Abstract

Digital media refers to the creation of any form of content using digital technologies and distributed through a defined media platform. It has opened up new avenues in the digital world. Especially, the rise of digital media has played a critical role in citizen journalism. The increasing use of smartphones with accessible internet and numerous social media platforms has allowed ordinary citizens to collect, produce, and circulate news content in real-time. In traditional media, journalists are trained professionals working in well-organized media such as print media, television broadcasts, radio podcasts, and news portals. Here, the journalists are formally educated and must adhere to the organization’s guidelines and ethics in their reporting and practice. The editor is the one who edits and ensures the accuracy of the information given by the reporter. Media organizations are legally responsible for the content they publish, whereas in citizen journalism, citizens don’t have to undergo a gate-keeping process; they are responsible for the content they share. Content is published instantly without editorial review, which is the primary cause for misinformation, fake, and fabricated news spread intentionally. This study explores how citizen journalism challenges traditional news values.
